WHAT ARE LAP COURSES ABOUT?

  • The Entrepreneurial Congregation (workshop) – This workshop teaches church leaders to recognize ‘out of the box’ opportunities to share, serve and reinvigorate their fellowship by using entrepreneurial strategies and by looking through entrepreneurial eyes, eyes that aren’t satisfied with the status quo, eyes that are always looking for ways to make a difference.

  • Developing an Effective Leadership Team (workshop) – Whether an elected/appointed volunteer or a called church worker, internal and external challenges can weaken your leadership team’s effectiveness. This workshop poses six essential questions about effective leadership and assists church leaders in shaping effective leadership strategies that work in their fellowship.

  • Personal Witness (course) – LCMS Christians are well know for their willingness to give to those involved in missionary work at home and abroad.  At the same time, we – as individuals - are among the least likely of ‘main stream’ Christians to talk about our personal relationship with Jesus outside our immediate family. When asked why, there is one common answer … that we don’t feel prepared to witness.  This course draws on a variety of excellent witness materials and organizes them in such a way that the student will be able to learn and practice at their own pace.  This course is ideal for individuals and can be adapted to a cell/home group or other format.

  • Practicing our Faith (course) – James, a leader at the Jerusalem Council and identified as the brother of Jesus, boldly asserts that faith without works is no faith at all (James 2:17). This course examines the many Christians ‘works’ that have become associated with faith and assists students in identifying and practicing personal works of faith within their circles of influence.

  • Identifying and Pursuing Ethnic Ministries (workshop) – This workshop is for those who sense an opportunity to become involved in serving those from another culture, but don’t know how to get started.  This workshop teaches participants how to identify ethnic ministry opportunities as well as an introduction to time honored as well as unique programs that serve real needs and share the Good News of Jesus.

  • ‘Enfranchising’ our Youth (workshop) – It’s no secret that the majority of our youth are leaving the church after high school, never to return. We can point to many issues in modern society as the cause but seldom do we consider that we might be our own worst enemy in terms of attracting and keeping our youth.  This workshop looks at the common ways congregations ‘disenfranchise’ youth from future participation in the life of the church.  Learn how to turn the corner and make a difference with this vitally important group!

  • Harnessing the Wisdom (workshop) – The LCMS (and most ‘main line’ denominations) is graying.  This reality is usually viewed in a negative way.  But imagine the accumulation of wisdom these gray heads contain!  This workshop addresses the issue straight up and stimulates a different way to think of this most valuable resource in the church.

  • The Pastor/Elder Dynamic (workshop) – Whether we use the term ‘deacon,’ or ‘elder,’ or another more contemporary term, the partnership between a pastor and a group of believing leaders can be an amazing blessing to a congregation.  This workshop reviews core Biblical models as well as explores a variety of strategies for the partnership between pastors and elders.

  • Mobilizing the Gifted (workshop) – It’s one thing to do a spiritual gifts inventory.  It’s quite another to effectively plug those gifts into ministry that actively pursues a congregation’s purpose.  In this workshop, learn about strategies that do just that – matching gifts with ministries that reach purpose!

  • The Blessing of Disagreement (workshop) – Generally speaking, most folks don’t get involved in a disagreement unless they feel strongly about some aspect of the issue.  This workshop looks at practical ways to take advantage of disagreements, identify and resolve them and grow closer as a congregation because of them.

  • Pursuing Purpose (workshop) – Many churches today have a mission or vision statement that often identifies a list of activities such as ‘preaching the Word,’ or ‘sharing the love of Jesus in our community.’  These are great ‘activities’ but are they a statement of why the Holy Spirit has gifted a particular body of believers in a given location?  This workshop asks the tough questions that encourage church leaders to articulate a clear statement of purpose and the action steps that allow them to purpose that purpose.

  • Personal Finances (course) – This course has been developed because we understand the financial issues and challenges – not the least of which is the often staggering student loan debt - that many church workers face as they prepare for and then become involved in ministry. Credit counseling, debt reduction strategies and other practical methods/referrals will be shared.
