My African Experience: A Woman God named Ruth

The moment I walked into the airport in Nairobi and sat waiting for the bus, I knew I was in a third world country.  The snack bar had little food which went well with the man outside cutting weeds down with a hand held giant sickle, one long stroke after another.  I began to imagine what he would do if I gave him a motorized version of the sickle I have at home in my garage?  I was in Africa for a month long mission trip.  Rev. Karl Keller, a Canadian Lutheran pastor had asked me to join him, over and over, and finally I found myself on an adventure with my 12 year old son in a country far different than my home. 

Fifteen of us joined together in Nairobi, Kenya to travel to Moshi, Tanzania, where we spent our first weekend trying to catch up with the 10-hour time change and a 6-hour bus ride across a paved but bouncy “cow crossing” two-lane highway.  The first Sunday we were there we took a 1 1/2 hour 4-wheel truck ride into the jungle to a huge Lutheran Church. . .
